About YorSpace
YorSpace is part of the growing Community Land Trust movement across the UK, working to create an alternative route to housing that empowers local people to design, develop and deliver affordable, low-carbon and sustainable homes in York.
Working in partnership with City of York Council, local residents and specialist delivery partners, YorSpace’s vision is to create resilient, community-led neighbourhoods where housing is designed by and for the people who live there, helping to build long-term community wealth.
Our investment
In 2024, Resonance Community Developers invested £2.5 million to support YorSpace in delivering 14 affordable, low-carbon homes at Lowfield Green in York.
The investment has helped bring forward the development of a former school site, forming part of a wider masterplan delivered by City of York Council for private, affordable and self-build housing. Working alongside People Powered Homes Ltd and Lowfield Green Housing Co-operative, the scheme is enabling a community-led approach to housing delivery in the city.
Impact
Through social investment, the partnership between Resonance and YorSpace has helped unlock a community-led housing development that might otherwise have stalled due to funding challenges.
The investment has enabled YorSpace to progress its first major scheme at Lowfield Green, delivering 14 affordable, low-carbon homes designed to reduce environmental impact while meeting local housing need. The homes support more sustainable ways of living, helping to lower carbon emissions through their design and energy efficiency, while also creating long-term, affordable housing for the community.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the scheme has strengthened the role of community-led housing in York, demonstrating how local people can take a leading role in shaping sustainable and affordable development.
By combining social investment with community ownership, the partnership is helping to create homes that support both people and planet, building stronger, more resilient and more sustainable communities

“We were stuck in a bit of a rut for several years. And so, to find a social investor like Resonance, who could see the benefit of what we’re doing and back YorSpace as a community benefit society, to make a project like this realised in a city that really needs it, is incredibly valuable.”
“We’re incredibly grateful for Resonance to back us with the money, but also the support they’ve given in engaging with other investors and groups has been really powerful.” James Neward, COO & Co-founder of YorSpace
