After being kicked out of his home by his dad when he was a young man, Steve described rough sleeping as the only option left for him. He experienced months of depression, experienced addiction, and was forced to quickly learn how to survive on the streets.
In our film below, Steve shares his experiences of homelessness, having “Nowhere to go, no one to turn to.”.
Steve was one of the first tenants to be housed by Resonance’s Everyone In Fund. Created at the start of the pandemic specifically to provide decent and safe homes for people sleeping rough in London, and having raised £16.5m from impact investors, this fund partnered with social justice charity Nacro to provide around 200 rough sleepers with a settled home, over its lifetime.
The fund has already bought 53 of the 56 properties – primarily one-bed homes - it set out to purchase and refurbish. All the properties have been made more energy efficient before we successfully handed them over to Nacro who have then furnished them to make them homely and welcoming for tenants. So far 50 people – who had been experiencing rough sleeping - are being housed and provided with specialist support services to enable them to start creating better lives for themselves, and to sustain their tenancies.
When Steve and his dog, Bella, moved into his new flat in Lewisham, he was supported by his Nacro Housing Support Worker, Seth, to settle in and to access support to help him with his recovery from addiction.
Thanks to Resonance’s established partnership with Nacro, 50 other people, just like Steve, now have a place of their own to call home. Having housing stability in their lives combined with the ongoing support they are receiving from Nacro means that every tenant housed by the fund can move forwards in their lives, build their resilience and confidence, and create positive futures for themselves.
