You may have heard it is B Corp Month – celebrated in March every year, B Corp companies across the world use this occasion to raise awareness of the movement, explain what it means to be a B Corp and share the importance of using business as a force for good.
Resonance, as a social impact fund manager, has impact embedded in our DNA, and the business we do with our investors and investees, helps us provide life changing homes and solutions for people and communities facing crisis. But being a B Corp is not just about the work you do, but about how you operate your business as a whole. Our B Corp story, which began in 2018, can be found on the B Corp pages on our website.
Part of our responsibility as a B Corp is to encourage our peers, clients and suppliers to consider improving the way they do business, and where possible, we try and work with other companies that have adopted the B Corp principles. These include investors into our funds such as Better Society Capital, suppliers of products and services such as Triodos Bank, KCS Print and Desklodge, and investees. There are too many to list, but we thought that we would use this opportunity to highlight and celebrate a few of the other B Corps with which we work.
SMILE TOGETHER DENTAL CIC
Smile Together is a full service dental practice based in Cornwall, which in 2021 became the first dental practice in the UK to become a B Corp. In 2018 Resonance arranged an investment into Smile Together enabling it to purchase a premises in Bodmin and expand its services. Smile Together currently operates across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It already treats over 40,000 patients per year including more than 4,000 special needs patients each year, twice as many as it is contracted and funded to see. It is also an employee-owned social enterprise; everyone in the team can opt to be a shareholder and thus have a genuine voice in Smile Together’s future. It runs the Brighter Smiles campaign, providing practical tooth-brushing clubs, fluoride varnishing and oral health education to around 5,000 children in areas of high decay across Cornish communities. It also runs the Smiles at Sea campaign where the specialist team visits harboursides across Cornwall and Devon to provide dental treatments and oral health advice to fishermen who rarely get the chance to visit a dentist due to the demands of their work.
