About We Hear You
We Hear You (WHY) is a charity providing free and low-cost specialist counselling to children, young people, adults and families affected by cancer and other life-threatening conditions across Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset and Wiltshire.
Founded in 1994, the charity delivers individual and couples counselling through specialist therapists, alongside mindfulness and nature-based programmes, creative therapies and peer support groups. Its services help people navigate the emotional impact of serious illness, bereavement and trauma.
Our investment
The Health & Wellbeing Challenge Fund invested £45,000 to support the launch of Talkativity, We Hear You's paid-for counselling service, alongside providing working capital to strengthen the charity's long-term sustainability.
Talkativity offers counselling for people who are able to fund their own sessions, creating an additional income stream that helps subsidise We Hear You's free and low-cost services, enabling more people to access specialist emotional support.
Impact
In 2024–25, We Hear You delivered 1,635 counselling sessions to more than 350 people, while a further 185 people took part in peer-led support groups.
The charity's support has led to measurable improvements in wellbeing, with adults reporting an average 58% improvement in wellbeing, while children and young people reported a 46% improvement following counselling.
By combining social investment with an innovative social enterprise model, We Hear You has strengthened its long-term sustainability while ensuring more people affected by cancer and other life-threatening conditions can access the specialist emotional support they need, regardless of their ability to pay.
