ABOUT: Sunflowers is a start-up organisation founded by 2 senior nurses with over 40 years combined experience of paediatric nursing care. They recognised that children who are medically stable were being held in hospital longer than appropriate simply because adequate care provision is scant and requires months of planning and preparation. Now, Sunflowers prides itself on being a home away from home, liasing with local schools for advice and support whilst providing expert care for children in a secure, safe environment.
PURPOSE OF INVESTMENT: When children are already being kept in hospital longer than appropriate, healthcare provision is often then further complicated by issues such as inadequate housing and parent training. This investment allowed the lease of a property to be secured as Sunflower’s first location for providing care for those with complex health needs. Once the lease was secured, the next step was the refurbishment and modifications to the property to create a high-quality care environment.
Lucy Andrews, Founding Director at Sunflowers: “Holding children in hospital for longer than necessary is both costly to the NHS, and has a detrimental health, social and developmental impact for the children due to the limitations of the hospital environment. Our step-down facility will offer a more relaxed environment for the children to play, learn and develop, but still with full professional nursing care and equipment tailored to their needs. We will also offer parent accommodation to enable the family to stay together wherever possible.”
Daniel Brewer, CEO at Resonance: “Finance for start-up organisations is in short supply in the current economic environment, with many lenders and investors preferring to back organisations with proven track records. However Sunflowers have a highly qualified senior management team and their ability to demonstrate the clear demand for this sort of care facility enabled us to put together a compelling business case, which we presented to appropriate investors in our networks.”
