ABOUT: Spike Island is a registered charity and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation in Bristol home to over 70 artists and 35 creative businesses and hundreds of UWE Bristol MA/BA Fine Art students. Their mission is to promote mental wellbeing and to provide easy access to and support in using a variety of art services in order to encourage inclusivity in the visual arts.
Spike Island offer a range of services- for the public these include free-to-enter exhibitions, gallery tours, artist talks and creative workshops, and for artists the services offered include 70 affordable artist studios, 50 co-working spaces for creative businesses to collaborate, the largest open-access print studio in the South West and access to resources such as kilns and high-end projectors.
PURPOSE OF INVESTMENT: The purpose of the investment from the South West SITR Fund was to enable Spike Island to support more artists and to increase the reach of art to broader communities. Spike Island aim to aide more artists and organisations by providing access to specialist equipment, helping them to produce new work, and assisting them in installing exhibitions. The investment enables Spike Island to continue to encourage expression and inclusivity as well as providing them with the means to use their Exhibition Spaces as a source of sustainable income, further supporting the charity.
