ABOUT: Spectrum Days is a Worcestershire and Staffordshire-based charity which currently supports 29 members with profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). The Spectrum team offer personalised support to its members and their families through day-care, short breaks and home visit services.
People with PMLD often are only able to communicate non-verbally meaning that they can have trouble communicating, require extra support in most areas of day-to-day life and might also mean that they have additional complex health needs or physical disabilities. This can be challenging for families, meaning that the support services offered by Spectrum Days are instrumental in the lives of families of people with PMLD.
PURPOSE OF INVESTMENT: The purpose of the investment from the West Midlands SITR Fund enabled Spectrum Days to purchase new mini buses to transport members from their homes to the centre. Prior to the investment Spectrum Days were down from five to two buses, the purchase of these new vehicles has meant that new members are joining who previously might not have been able to get to the centre, meaning that more members and their families are able to access the crucial specialist support services provided by Spectrum Days.
Maggie Allen, Spectrum’s Chief Executive: “The investment has come at a really important time for the charity. Our vehicles are aged and expensive to maintain, so we are replacing our fleet. […] Our service is niche, providing specialist support to people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). We cover the whole of Central and North Worcestershire with our members travelling as much as 20 miles to benefit from our specialist service, so transport is vital to our members and their families. People like Richard and his parents. Nothing is simple for Richard. He needs total support with every aspect of his life. If his mum Caron had to get him ready for his day and bring him into our service and repeat this activity at the end of the day, she wouldn't be able to work. […] Richard enjoys a wide range of experiences and therapies in the time he spends with us. Our transport means he can access not only the fantastic range of resources and equipment in our building, but he can be a part of this community, be with his friends and enjoy the same range of activities we all enjoy.”
Caron, Richard’s mum: “Spectrum Days is our lifeline. We can send our son here, safe in the knowledge that he will have the very best care in a fun and stimulating environment. Spectrum Days provides a full and varied range of member-specific activities where they operate with an exceptionally high health and safety protocol, ensuring that the health and wellbeing of all staff and members are of the utmost importance. […] The provision of care that Spectrum Days provide is invaluable to both the members and their families. It offers a bespoke, caring, friendly and professional service at all times and we highly recommend them.”
Grace England, Resonance’s Senior Investment Manager: “We are delighted to be supporting Spectrum Days with a blend of investment and grant support through the Resonance West Midlands SITR Fund, after working with the team for a number of years in hope of supporting the brilliant work that they do. Spectrum provides an invaluable service to people with PMLD and their families and it is great to see how social investment can help services like these grow and impact more people’s lives.”
