ABOUT: Sense Abilities provides accessible pop-up sensory play, advocacy, information, advice and guidance for families and organisations. They particularly target families with children with learning disabilities.

ABOUT: Managing director Suzannah Jones was first introduced to sensory through her son Elliott. Born with Down’s Syndrome and other complications, Elliott spent his first couple of years of life in and out of hospital. As a result he was extremely limited in what he could do. However; his progress blossomed when being able to access a sensory environment. She went on to have 2 more children and soon realised that sensory environments weren’t just a ‘special needs thing’. They too blossomed just the same as he did. She founded Sense Abilities after seeing a lack of public sensory spaces available. With a wide range of equipment, senses including sight, touch, sound and smell, can be stimulated. Sense Abilities want this to be accessible to all no matter age or ability. They provide downloadable play ideas, an online sensory shop, as well as a new pop-up sensory play service in Torbay and information and guidance for families.
PURPOSE OF INVESTMENT: This investment allowed for the organisation to trial a permanent centre in Torbay, which can offer a wider range of multi-sensory activities and a therapy space. There is now a sensory room for hire within their new Sensory Hub premises, providing a unique friendly environment where children and individuals can explore, sounds, textures and colours in a secure space.
