About Leigh Spinners Community Benefit Society
Leigh Spinners Community Benefit Society was established to bring the iconic Leigh Spinners Mill into community ownership and secure its future for local people. Working alongside Leigh Building Preservation Trust, the organisation is transforming one of the UK's most significant Grade II-listed mill complexes into a vibrant community hub that supports enterprise, culture and local services.
Today, the mill is home to more than 60 businesses, charities and community organisations, ranging from independent retailers and creative enterprises to community groups providing domestic abuse support, human rights advice and educational activities celebrating the town's industrial heritage.
Our Investment
Resonance invested £35,000 through the Community Land & Finance fund across two investments in 2020 and 2021. The funding supported the creation of the Community Benefit Society, project scoping and viability work, helping lay the foundations for the community-led redevelopment of Leigh Spinners Mill.
Our Impact
Our investment helped establish the Community Benefit Society and progress plans to secure the long-term future of Leigh Spinners Mill as a community-owned asset.
Today, the mill provides affordable space for more than 60 businesses, charities and community organisations, creating opportunities for local enterprise while preserving an important part of Leigh's industrial heritage. From supporting small businesses and creative industries to hosting community services and educational programmes, the project is helping to strengthen the local economy and create a thriving destination owned by and for the community.
