ABOUT: Leigh Spinners Mill is one of the most important mill complexes in the UK and has been described as the finest late era mill in the UK. A grade II-listed building, the mill is the biggest building in Leigh. Historic buildings like Spinners Mill were built for a new generation, offering work and economic growth to the towns they were built within. Leigh Building Preservation Trust set out to restore this iconic mill to house local organisations on each floor. Now home to everything from jiu jitsu, a yarn shop and acting classes to bespoke furniture, and educational days out for students to learn local history (in costume), Spinners Mill has truly become a community hub. Spinners Mill also provides essential community resources to support local people, such as a domestic violence support group (AIM Northwest), and human rights support group (Everything Human Rights).
PURPOSE OF INVESTMENT: The Spinners Mill project initially began through Leigh Building Preservation trust, to help over 60 current Spinners Mill tenants build business relationships and restore an 100-year-old historic landmark. The project also prioritises talented local people so they can thrive at home in their own town without the heavy financial burdens of big city pricetags. Resonance’s investment supported the project scoping and setting up of the CBS, and then enabled the group to complete their viability testing of the scheme.
