About BHESCo
Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-operative (BHESCo) is a community energy social enterprise dedicated to accelerating the transition to energy-efficient buildings and locally owned renewable energy. By developing and delivering community-led energy projects, BHESCo helps organisations reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs and build long-term energy resilience.
Since its founding, BHESCo has delivered dozens of carbon reduction projects, helping communities cut emissions while making clean, affordable energy more accessible.
Our investment
In 2024, Resonance Community Developers invested £200,000 alongside We Have The Power and other philanthropic investors to support the installation of solar panels on five schools across Brighton & Hove.
The investment enabled the projects to progress without delay, installing solar arrays with a combined capacity of 260kWp. By generating renewable electricity on-site, the schools are reducing their reliance on grid energy while lowering long-term operating costs.
Impact
Through long-term social investment, the partnership has helped five schools transition to cleaner, locally generated renewable energy, reducing both carbon emissions and energy costs.
Over the lifetime of the solar installations, the project is expected to save schools an estimated £3.1 million in energy bills while preventing around 2,700 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. These savings can be reinvested into education, helping schools direct more resources towards pupils rather than rising energy costs.
By combining social investment with community-led renewable energy, the partnership is supporting the transition to a lower-carbon future while strengthening local energy resilience and delivering lasting environmental and social benefits.
“We are extremely grateful to Resonance Community Developers for its support of these projects. This allowed the solar panels to be installed without delaying the projects for five months, which is how long it took to raise the funds through our bond offer.” Kayla Ente, Founder and CEO of BHESCo
