Hints and tips to help you make savings when shopping and cooking.
Rising inflation is pushing up food prices: it was reported in August that annual supermarket bills will typically soar by £533, or more than £10 a week, as grocery price inflation hits its highest level since at least 2008. So it is not surprising that more households are searching for ways to reduce their weekly food costs.
Find your local Trussell Trust food bank, their contact details and opening times.
If you're struggling to afford the essentials or need advice and support you can call one of their free helplines.
The Trussell Trust opened its first UK food bank in 2000 and operates over half of food banks in the country. IFAN represents food banks outside the Trussell Trust and since 2020 has been collecting data from them across the UK.
FareShare saves good food from going to waste. They redistribute surplus food from some of the UK’s top food companies to nearly 9,500 charities and community groups.
Stop UK Hunger supports a nationwide network of food banks and together they provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.
Every year in the UK over 7million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away, a lot of which has past its 'best before' date, but would still be perfectly good to eat.
Waste Less, Save More specialise in surplus and short-dated stock, food that is either near or just passed its 'best before' date – allowing them to pass on huge savings to customers.
OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. For your convenience, OLIO can also be used for non-food household items, too.
The Too Good To Go app lets you find unsold food from restaurants and shops in your area. Their ‘Surprise Bags’ of surplus food are offered at a discounted price and help to prevent food waste.
